Congratulations on embarking on this exciting and fulfilling career. Wherever you are, on your road to becoming a qualified counsellor, know that you are not alone. Connecting with others may be your secret to success.
Why connection matters:
In a profession built on relational dynamics, your ability to connect with, and feel connected to, others counts. During counselling study, you will be given regular opportunities to partake in personal development groups and skills sessions. As daunting as these may feel, use them wisely. Doing so will not always be easy, you are likely to feel a whole array of emotions from anxiety to acceptance, resentment to reverence and hopefully a hearty amount of wonder and zest. Indeed, you are likely to experience many of the emotions your clients may experience in the therapeutic space too. By allowing yourself to experience in the therapeutic space too.
"When setting out on a journey do not seek advice from someone who never left home." - Rumi
By allowing yourself to reflect on the process of being open in connection, you gain a greater appreciation for your clients’ experience; a deeper understanding of yourself as a person, and as the therapist you are likely to become.
Personal Therapy is also a vital way to achieve this goal and is usually a requirement of most training courses. At Pure Counselling & Psychotherapy we understand how valuable this personal investment it, and how it can be used to enrich your wellbeing, your understanding of the therapeutic process, and deepen your excitement for embarking on this amazing career. Our extensive educational background and training means we fully appreciate the learning which can come from engaging in personal therapy. Together we can work therapeutically on your aims, then reflect on our sessions with shared theoretical knowledge and understanding.
Want to up-skill?
We also offer skill mentoring sessions, to students who wish to practice and develop their counselling skills outside of the classroom. Our warm, engaging, and inspirational teaching and training style will be just the thing to help you feel more confident as you approach your skills assessments and counselling placement.
Note: For ethical reasons, mentoring sessions are not available for students who I have worked with therapeutically, and vice versa.
